If your current phono stage sounds good through your headphone amp and headphones then I wouldn't point to the phono stage as the problem since it sounds good through that chain. Getting a "tubey" phono stage might improve the sound through the Cyrus/KEF chain but then it might sound TOO tubey through your headphones.In this case I would wonder whether the amp/speaker cable speakers might be the cause of the "sterile CD" sound. Since I am not familiar with either the amp or speakers I can't really comment on specifics.
