Stupid Question for Garrard Experts....

Hi, I just acquired a nice 301...but the bearing/spindle assembly was in pieces in a zip lock bag.It looks like it was taken apart to be cleaned as someone filled the bearing assembly with oil as opposed to the grease that it requires via the grease nipple.
Here's the dumb question: the spindle rides on a thrust pad...the pad has a bronze type disc on one side and a plastic/nylon type wafer on the other side... the spindle rides on the bronze side right?..it would surely eat through the nylon side? The old Garrard assembly diagrams don't show this clearly...sorry stupid I know ...but just want to reassure myself...
