Long-term listening.

I completely agree. A major fault of A-B testing, with rapid switching between the two, is that sound is complex, and it takes a while for subtle difference to be recognized, appreciated, and then to become important. My son has stressed this to me repeatedly, as he often listens to a component for weeks before going to the comparison unit and then listening to it for some time. This is time-consuming, but it can really make clear what the differences are. Effectively, you have to get to "know" a component, and like complex or interesting people, you can't do that it five minutes.

This became most clear to me when I sold my Arcam FMJ CD23. I had bought a Ayre
CX-7, and it was clearly better sounding when I installed it, but not overwhelmingly so. I had been using the Ayre for about two months when I sold the Arcam. It was a local puchase, and I re-installed it so that the buyer could hear it. I almost cringed when I heard it! After two months of the Ayre, the limitations of the Arcam were obvious. The buyer loved the Arcam and went away a happy man.
