Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

I just had that very experience

I recently changed turntables...bought a Teres 255 to replace my 23 yr. old Oracle MKII. Two completely different designs.

The Teres does some marvelous things compared to the Oracle. The background is "blacker," the bass is both deeper and tighter, there's more inner detail, vocals have more presence...all those good audiophile things. But certain high frequencies (mass violins, cymbals, high-hats) are strident and just plain annoying. This wasn't happening with the Oracle.

BTW, my arm is the Unitrac and the cartridge is the AT OC9 ML/II.

I've given high praise to the OC9 on this forum as have others. Some, though, feel it is thin and unmusical. I never felt that way about it...until used with the Teres (actually, the bass and mid-range are fine; it's just those high frequencies).

What I think is happening is that the Teres is allowing the OC9 to show its "true colors." The frequecy response chart that comes with the cartridge shows a frequenct rise above 6K Hz, which is now clearly audible.

Also, if in fact, the Teres is not adding any coloration, but rather letting the cartridge do its thing, then maybe Audio-Technica's recommendation of using 20ohms impedence with a step-up transformer (like my Cary PH-302 has) is correct. Like, maybe they know what they're talking about! Again, in other words, under ideal conditions (which is what the Teres is allowing) the impedence should really be 20 ohms. The PH-302 impedence is fixed at 100K ohms.

Soooo...yes, a change in equipment did lead to a dramatic change in sound in this case.

BTW, I had an original OC9 (different cantilever material, different shaped stylus) in my spare cartridge box. I put it on the Unitrac and the highs were much sweeter and the overall tone much warmer. Not perfect yet, but of a magnitude better.

Am expecting a modded Denon 103 to arrive shortly along with an SUT
with changable impedences to test. In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas about "warmer" cartridges than the ML/II, I'll gladly consider them.

Thanks for listening,
Jeff
