1) It provides a mechanical ground path for vibrations at the LP/platter. Is this good? Don't know, but some have said it tightens up the bass response.2) It maintains constant platter height regardless of platter loading. Without the bearing, if you use a heavy clamp or weight, you need to use it all the time, otherwise the platter height will change when you don't use it.
