I've got the 1600 MK2 full auto version(modded)of the 1700 MK2.What you might want to ask the owner/seller(if it's a big deal to you) is if the cueing servo mechanism works (belt that runs the auto arm,cueing deteriorates after many years rendering the cueing function and auto return useless). The cueing and auto return functions on these 1600's and 1700's are strictly servo driven; This means that if the servo or belt no longer works you will not be able to use the lifter cue arm manually,either(it's all "interlocked")as you would with a 1200---the black cue lifter is then just for looks on the 1700 MK2 (think of a power window on a car---if the power window motor burns out,no amount of toggling that window switch up and down is going to matter as opposed to a manual crank for a window). That is a big difference in the cueing mechanisms between the 1200 and 1600/1700 MK2's.At least with the 1200, the cueing is mechanical or manual. If the cueing does not work on the 1700MK2 you'll have to be very careful lifting and lowering the tonearm yourself with absolutely no cue/lift assist.---If this is the case and you have more questions on the 1700MK2 my suggestion would be to ping inmate Technics 1600MK2 specialist Scottrt for more info. or help...He's very thorough and will tell you what you will be looking at or dealing with on the 1700MK2.When they work properly,as mine does, they are very smooth and quiet operating Technics decks(once the servo belt issue is,well, not an issue, they are basically a shweeeet semi and full auto functioning table version of the 1200).I listen to my 1600MK2 everyday/2-4 hours and have had it for months now----never a prob or issue.True, it is refurbed and modded ;-)
As far as quality, I've owned both decks (1200 M3D and 1600MK2/1700MK2).The 1700MK2 should be very well damped as the 1600MK2 and 1200 is.You're right, not as heavy as the 1200(but don't be fooled by the 1700 MK2's lighter plinth than the 1200's). 1600/1700 MK2 both use the double isolated suspension which to some gives the music a "livelier" characteristic in sound quality as opposed to some who have claimed the 1200 has a more subdued sound due to the thick rubber portion of the plinth---I personally never noticed such a "deadened" or unlively sound quality from the 1200.Also, has that special TNRC anti-resonance material to keep the unwanted vibes at bay.My 1600MK2 has Cardas aftermarket tonearm wiring and phono cables.From what I understand the stock 1200's,1600 & 1700 used the same stock tonearm wiring and phono RCA cables.
