On the pic I have an M97XE, but I am currently using a Clearaudio Aurum Beta Wood which, not surprisingly given the $400 price tag, sounds much better than the Shure - which is no slouch.

I agree, turntables are a great platform for experimenting with designs and "expressing" yourself. You can change so many things: materials, dimensions, suspension, armboard, choice and number of tonearms, etc... a tweaker's delight.
