No personal experience, but from reading web sites about 78s, it appears that they recommend tracking forces of about 5 gms give or take, which pretty much lets out high compliance cartridges - their stylus would probably collapse under that much tracking force. Also if you take a look at the KAB website (kabusa.com) they list styli for several cartridges that can be adapted to play either modern records or 78s and the 78 styli generally have a low compliance compared to the stereo styli (for example, the Stanton 881S stereo stylus has a compliance of around 25-30 compared to 10 for the 78 version.
