Considered posting this in Music, but there seem to be more jazz fans here. Just wound up a quickie 4 day family vacation in NYC which included a trip to "Bill's Place" in Harlem, which I would highly recommend. Superb musicians (Bill Saxton, a very accomplished hard bop sax player is the owner/operator and plays with his quartet-all of whom were every bit as good-there every Friday evening) and a very intimate, almost "house party" atmosphere where you can mingle and talk with the players between sets. A $15 cover, with no liquor license so you bring your own. The "club" is on the main floor of a brownstone off the commercial streets in a pretty much residential area. Small stage with about a dozen chairs right (and I mean right) in front of it and a very small adjoining room which still affords a great view and hear of the musicians, which that night included, as well as Bill who was superb, a drummer that had played with Jimmy Smith for 21 years. You'd have a hard time fitting more than 25-30 people in this spot.Off the beaten path in NYC (just a couple of blocks from the A train stop at 135th), but the adventurous will be rewarded with a wonderful musical experience. We (my wife and two sons, age 10 and 13) had a blast. Hope to go again sometime if I get back to New York.
