What I did, is that I simply took the original VPI motor and put it outboard. Then I made a plinth and also took it "outboard".
Then the remaining VPI base, I took out the "suspension" and converted it into a sand base.IMHO, modularizing a VPI is a great approach in improving it in baby steps. It also gives you an enormous amount of flexibility to try out different materials for footers, plinth, motor mount or "plinth", motor drives, belt materials, etc. You can experiment until you get the "tuning" you are looking for.
My current DIY design, is this way, but it is not at all VPI-based.
