as an amsterdam resident, i second rene r's suggestions. concerto is the best overall place and should be your first stop. recordmania on the ferdinand bolstraat is a more than decent all around shop, and is a good second stop. the place by the paradiso/leidseplein specializes in jazz and pop and can be expensive. the place by the norderkerk is called flesch and i haven't been there for a long while. they specialized in classical but the last time i was there they seemed to be moving toward pop. they're the smallest of the 4 shops mentioned. concerto and recordmania are mostly in the 10 euros per record or less range, with lots of 1/2 euro bargains.yes there are many thriftshops and such but i wouldn't recommend wandering around in the hope of finding a good place, unless you've got lots of time to spend on wandering.
good luck
robert
