In my experience Philips recordings generally have a seductive mid-range which often tends to compensate for the less than optimum extension at the frequency extremes when compared to some of the releases on the other labels you mention. That does not mean, however, that they are not thoroughly enjoyable in their own right.Somewhere along the line Philips and Deutsche Gramophone LPs (Both from the same parent company as I recall) developed a less than stellar sonic reputation, perhaps because so much more widely distributed than other classical labels, and the conventional wisdom became that they are sonically inferior. Sheep that we are in this hobby-and given that for many how it sounds is more important than the music-we just go along. Heaven forbid that we should listen and decide for ourselves!
Perhaps your post will help to overcome this notion, but I'm not optimistic.
