Hi,
Well yeah, in a similar sense even those who own very high quality equipment with high dynamic headrooms end up being dissapointed because their system's gain structure is off kilter. In my case for instance, I could get away without using an active linestage because my amp has low input sensitivity to achieve full power output, and even with it's lowish output power the 2 pair of speakers I have are quite efficient (94 and 97dB). My current phonostage is 65dB max w/ volume control. I still lower the volume even if the my stepups are just ~1:12. I'm still on the planning stages in building a 40dB phonostage, a simpler but ‘better’ designed circuit IMHO. I'm also contemplating if Hashimoto's 1:40 step ups are worth the price.
