With a bonded stylus, a diamond tip cut to whatever shape (conical, eliptical, etc) is bonded to a (usually) round metal shank which then fits into the cantilever.
With a nude stylus, the shank, either round or preferrably square, is part of the diamond and fits directly into the cantilever.Most better styli are of the nude variety.
