I wouldn't do it either

As all the others have posted, a good table/cheap cartridge will outplay a good cartridge/cheap table almost every time.

vinyl1 explained why. Today's top cartridges are tracing waveforms accurately down to the molecular level. To do this well, the operating environment must be rock stable. No $700 table/arm combo can provide that.

I'll part ways with John Ellison and his metallic ear however. ;-)

My main rig is an underpriced $6K table with a $4K arm. While I totally agree with John that a Denon 103 (or any other decent but inexpensive cartridge) plays WAY above its head on such a rig, so does a reference caliber cartridge like my $5K ZYX UNIverse. There's no comparison.

But on my $1K second rig even a $1500 Shelter 901 is a disaster. It's simply too revealing of all the shortcomings and flaws in the table and arm. I wouldn't spend more than $200-300 tops on a cartridge for that rig.
