Does your suggested price of $500 for the Papst motor mean you know of a source of new motors? I was under the impression they were no longer made. These things are built like tanks so unless the spindle gets bent you should be safe with a used one. They are hard to find though, look out for one of the Empire or ROK TTs or old reel to reels in which they were originally used.A new brushed DC motor of highest quality will cost you about $120. Add about the same for parts for a high spec I x R controller, $50 for battery & power supply, $?? for the enclosure. If you are going to go the rx-5000 separate motor pod route and built it yourself you might as well integrate the motor drive into the enclosure.
Probably the best quality possible is a brushless DC motor but mine's eaten probably $1000 so far and it's not perfected (if I had more money and time I would try to get it right but it's on the back burner for now).
Don't bother with a single phase synch motor, at the current state of play they are the worst option.
