Re: Vinyl Rookie looking for advice

Welcome Brian,

As far as the pops and tics, it sounds like you need to give your records a good cleaning. The important tools needed for this is a good cleaning fluid, a couple of good brushes, and a way to suck the loosened muck out of the grooves and off the record. They make record cleaning machines, or you can make your own using a $20 1hp. Shopvac from Walmart and a beater turntable from a thrift store. It is also recommended that you get some new inner sleeves to put the cleaned records in after cleaning so the next time you play it all it would need is a few revolutions with a carbon fiber brush.

Vinyl is very hands on, but very rewarding. Spend some time using the search function and visit the FAQ section. It takes some time to get some of this stuff figured out. It isn't hard, just a learning process.

Also, take a look and see what cartridge is on your table. If it is a moving magnet, you might be able to just replace the stylus instead of buying a whole new cartridge.

There is much more to cover, but this should be enough for now.

Steve
