Re: Restoration Suite vs. Restoration Bundle

Why would you want to use noise filters for digital transfers? Having several years of experience using this stuff (from both Waves & Sonic Foundry) I can assure you that they ultimately kill the fun out of vinyl sound. By canceling the background noise you also kill the atmosphere on the recordings, making them sound clean but VERY WEIRD, even with moderate use. It's not possible to separate the noise from the recordings without affecting the music as well.

Well, of course, if you want that kind of muted sound, then go for the Restoration Bundle, it's an easy and well working package as such, but it doesn't "better" the vinyl sound any, quite contrary.

DE-crackler of Waves works quite well though. I have found it very useful to limit the excess crackle when transferring old worn out 7" singles to digital archives (too lazy to spin 7"s all the time). But use it with consideration, only in severe cases. And stay out of noise reduction.
To sum it up: noise reduction is the root of all evil. Too bad they use it in commercial releases as well: in order to cancel the tape hiss. I'd rather listen to hissy masters than this muted weird stuff. Yuck!
