You wrote: "I always hear how the reissues are sonically not as good as the early pressings. Does this apply to the OJC pressings as well."To the extent that I've personally done back-to-back listening tests of the same album/different pressings, the original is always better and, if available in both stereo and mono, the mono is always better. This includes OJCs.
But ultimately, so what?
I listened for decades to reissue pressings of classic jazz LPs on crap, consumer grade stereo gear. And you know what? I was moved, deeply and intensely, by the music. It was in this environment that I developed a love of jazz.*
My point is: don't let audiophile or record collector weenie-dom discourage you from exploring jazz on vinyl. Once you become a full-fledged jazz weenie you can obsess over pressings, start to use expressions like " yeah, man" and write angry letters to Down Beat.
Until then, thrill in the knowledge that you now own more jazz LPs than 99.9% of people on planet Earth. And that's cool, daddy-o.
*Pardon me if you re not actually a jazz new B. My intention here is not to patronize you.
