It's hard to tell without a pic, but I believe that the headshell sitting over the disk is not an issue. The entire arm assembly rotates (the black cylinder thingy) back and forth - I can make mine sit as you describe and it's trivial to push it back (one allen wrench) but - again - without some pics I might be guessing wrong.
The SME can be adjusted a million ways.In terms of value, you might have from a decent to good deal given that SME 3009 are going up in prices and even if the arm and TT are completely shot, you can probably sell the various parts for that amount or more (heck I paid $70 for an SME headshell). But, unless things are in really good shape, I would not say that you have a GREAT deal.
It would also help to know if the arm is a Series I, II, or II (improved).
