Re: Nottingham Spacedeck: Spacearm vs Morch UP4

I don't care much for the current Spacearm personally. I thought they were a lot better when they had aluminum arm tubes; the carbon tube just isn't as tight and lively sounding.

I actually prefer a plain ol' Rega RB 250 on the Spacedeck over the stock arm for the same reason, and the UP-4 beats the Rega arm in just about every way.

The UP-4 has no shortage of deep, tight, tuneful bass in my system, and the DP-6 goes even deeper. The slightly twitchy handling of the UP-4 might be an issue the first few times you cue it up, but it's quickly forgotten.

The Morch sounds lively, colorful, dynamic, and tonally rich where the Rega arms can be a little grey sounding. The ability to quickly swap armwands allows for perfect resonant frequency tuning and easy cartridge comparisons, and wands are available with either copper or silver wire for around $300 each, so you can buy a UP-4 with one or two extra wands and still be well ahead of other arms in this price range.

Bias-compensation is on-the-fly and increases as the arm moves toward the label. Damping is adjustable, and unlike the Spacearm, so is azimuth. The arm comes with a total of four different counterweights that can be used in any combination, so you'll always have the right setup for any cartridge.

I understand that the UP-4 is a popular match with the Spacedeck in the UK, but I don't see the combo mentioned all that often in the US; not sure why.

Nice system, BTW! I absolutely love that Fi X.
