Re: Time for a "massive" turntable: Spacedeck vs Scheu

>>What is your impression of the Wright with respect to noise etc.<<<

Hi Rene,

It is quiet in my 'passive' set up (no active preamp). But noise level went down a significant margin when I did some mods to it. Warning: It voids the warranty - but in my case I live far abroad anyways. I wouldn't recommend modding to those who lack some basic electronics knowledge and skill like soldering etc. for safety reasons. My system consists of a lowish input sensitivy valve amp that could be easily driven directly by a 1.8V-2Vrms line level soruce output (cd's). I have high eff speakers btw, so it works for me. It all depends on the "gain structure" of one's set up and taste, plus the compromise/s one is willing to live with.

>>However I read that the way to run the Wright is with the gain turned down anyway.<<<

Those who run it that way already have adequate gain in their system or run an active preamp. If they turn em higher they would overload their system = distortion. However, it lowers the noise a lil bit more if turned down - the output stage is really a buffer with gain to accomodate most types of systems. If you use a "passive pre" with a lowish step-up ratio (1:10) transformer w/ the 103R, the Wright would be a better choice to compensate. Ideally, one would use a higher ratio for the 103R. I can't comment on the Yph's sound and noise level, but I'm pretty sure it would integrate well with the Y since Don designed it as a 'system'. It's interesting to note that Don used high quality stuff for the Yph when I took a look at the innard pic in one review (eg, polystyrene/foil riaa eq caps etc.).
