John, I thought about using paper as a weight.
My 80gsm 'Reflex' brand printer paper appears insufficiently 'accurate' to use as a calibrating weight - ie weight varies from sheet to sheet. In theory, an A4 sheet should weigh 5gms by my calculation.
I weighed 4 sheets and got: 5.42g, 5.21g, 5.26g and 5.45g. These measurement were repeatable with .01g precision.
This paper appears to exceed its 80gsm spec by a small amount and has slight variation sheet to sheet - this makes it unsuitable to test a digital scale IMO....and then there is cutting errors in prepared weights etc. I suspect my calibration weight does much better.
