Re: DENON DP-2000 (2500, 2550) unstable speed

It's possible the speed sensor signal going to the servo speed control is weak. That's the first place I'd look and the easiest. The speed signal is generated by a stripe of magnetic stuff (looks just like old-fashioned iron oxide magnetic tape) painted on the vertical lip just inside the rim of the platter. Check this carefully. It is possible this material has deteriorated and has no signal on it any more -I've never seen that happen but have read about it. The only cure for that is a new platter.

The signal is read by a little tape head that you can see on the chassis when you remove the platter. This may be corroded or damaged or may have been jarred so it is no longer reading the mag stripe on the platter effectively. Try cleaning the head and adjusting the gap. You adjust the gap with the platter in place- there are squarish holes in the platter you can rotate over the tape head. Loosen its mounting screws slightly and take a piece of ordinary cardstock (3X5 card type) use it as a spacer to set the gap between the head and the rim. Spin VERY VERY CAREFULLY to make sure the gap is open all the way and doesnt scrape the mag stripe. If you trash the mag stripe the platter is toast!

If that doesn't work, we have to assume the problem is a bad component in the speed servo circuit. If you take the motor base out of the plinth, take off the cover, and look at the internal circuit boards it's easy to spot the motor driver board. The official Denon service manual has a detailed procedure for diagnosing speed control, but you need the manual, an oscilloscope and some reasonably heavy electronic skills. If you can spot the bad component (maybe try some cold spray on the resistors) there are a couple parts suppliers that have limited NOS Denon parts for the DP- series; one is Pacific Parts (whom I've not had much luck with). Another inmate found a supplier with some stuff on http://www.tritronicsinc.com/ Search the archives. I don't believe that serious relacement parts will be available.

I have waited on eBay for years (literally)to find the right parts- these are fine rare machines ansd deserve restoration, but I'm a Denon-freak. I know of no one who specializes in doing repairs commercially for the Denon TT's- its pretty complex. I don't believe that your local Denon service outlet will have the knowlege or willingnesss ot undertake that. Get me lined up for a McArthur Grant and I'll drop out and open that business. If your problem isn't fixable, I have 2 spare DP-2000 tables and I'd be willing to discuss parting one or selling one to you. If you're thinking about selling your DP-2000 "dead," email me - I could use some of the parts for other Denon projects.
