Empire 208/298 - Will it take modern cartridges

Hello all,
I am looking to get an empire 208/298 sometime in the near-ish future. Will I be able to mount a modern cartridge (I have a Shure M97x lying around) on the empire arms (980 or 98 models)?
Also, if you have alternative vintage turntable suggestions, I'm all ears. I have never heard an empire, I just like their looks, and it's going in my home-office system (large advents, Sony STR-6036A receiver), so it just has to sound pretty good, not absolutely top-of-the-line.
