Re: go to kyoto

There are others in the forum who are more expert than I am on Japanese pressings, but my general experience is very positive. IIRC there is a standard for Japanese vinyl (i.e., the composition - look in the archives).

I collect a lot of the same artists and was very pleased with what I found. Interestingly enough, I found a first pressing of LA Woman at Jet Set, so you can find American pressings as well.

Many of the Japanese pressings I bought were for records that I already own and as a general matter, I found them to be excellent. I bought a very cool red or green (can't remember which) reissue of Pet Sounds, and some Queen, Doors, Roxy Music, Linda Ronstadt, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, and a number of other artists I can't remember. Eagles - On the Border, for example, is a superior pressing to my copy (which was not a first pressing).

There is a covered mall/shopping area in central Kyoto and I basically just walked around and looked for record stores. Many are upstairs in buildings and you need to look for signs. If you go to Jet Set, I'm sure that they can tell you where some other stores are located.

The interesting thing is that while I saw vinyl everywhere, I had a very difficult time finding any SACDs!

Have fun!
