SorboGel Mat - Directions from AQ

In my last post I mentioned that I am getting terrific results using my SorboGel mat. I know this is not the popular opinion on AA, but my results may just be emphasized as I am using it on my DD TT. Anyway, I was concerned when it arrived from AQ that it was the black color and not blue. I've read here that the blue is preferred because it does not leave residue behind as much as the black *could*. Well, I e-mailed AQ with my concern, this is their response:

Dear Thomas,

Thanks for your e-mail regarding our SorboGel Record Mat.

We changed the color of the mat from blue to black several years ago due to customer comments that indicated a cosmetic preference for the black mat. The formulation of SorboGel used in both is identical, only the color has been changed.

Regarding residue, whether blue or black, these mats need to be washed with warm water and a small amount of dishwashing liquid. Then rinse thoroughly and dry before applying to the turntable. There is a small amount of mold release left on the mat after manufacture that should be removed before using. If left on the mat, some of the mold release residue can be transferred to the LP. This does no permanent damage but it can leave a slight discoloration to the LP. A simple washing as described above eliminates this mold release. It only needs to be done once.

Hope this answers your questions.

Best regards,

Joe
