Shelter 501 Problems

I'm having some frustation problems with the Shelter 501 mk 2. I find it presents the highs as too loud and forward in relation to the rest of the sound and it has a de-emphasis on lower mid range and lower end. A denon DL103 although not as detailed and transperant has an immaculate high to lows balance in comparison.
I'm not sure if its just the way the cart is or the way I've set it up but I'm running out of things to try. I've tried a VTF from 1.7 to 2.2, varying VTA all over the place. I also tried loading the MC stepups down to very low - as low as 1000 ohms through a 1:10 stepup (this would present ~10ohms to the cart).
So I'm concluding this is the way this cart sounds and likely not for me. I'd like to be wrong but ...
Any thoughts?
