"does it do this by reducing the moment of inertia, or by some other effect?"If I understand how all this works the stuff on the other side of the pivot relative to the headshell side stuff is kinda like anti-mass. More mass close to the pivot decreases the effective mass and less mass further away increases it. If the C/W is made of unobtainium there will be no change but you will be broke. :-)
