There is nothing and I repeat NOTHING wrong with using the upper portion of the volume control on your amp. It in fact will improve the sound a bit if it is a volume control pot.

The MM setting is the appropriate setting for a MM cartridge. To my knowledge, nearly all of the MM cartridges have a standard 47K ohm load and some have a small capacitive load as well. I believe that the Shure cart's require 250pf.
If you use the MC settings, the cartridge won't have the proper loading and the response curve will most likely not be flat(It will sound bloated or tinny). The MC setting will also have a very large gain 60dB+ versus 33-40dB for MM setting and you may overload the input of the preamp section in your amp or have to turn the volume down so low that you can hardly use the volume control as it will go from too quiet to deafening in a minimal turn of the volume control.
