Re: Technics phono stage

The SU-9070 was not a phono stage it was a full function preamp. While not an R&B Series device, it had great specs for its day. It had a clean, low distortion, wide bandwidth, phono stage that was head and shoulders better than what was found in the 9090DB receiver. Don;t get me wrong, the 9090DB was a great receiver and I sold lots of them back in the day, but it was more famous for it's amplifier and tuner performance than its preamp.

FYI, I have an SU-300MC head amp and I keep it around in case I need the additional gain some day. The phono in the 9070 is similar in quality.

Also, I don't know if you are thinking of buying either of these, or if you have access to them, but bear in mind that these units are quite old and mass produced consumer products. They were from a time prior to the great leaps in sound quality that occurred with respect to phono stages. I would venture to say that any current low priced quality phono stage of similar specs will likely sound better due to the greater attention to parts quality and power supply quality.

I hope this helped.

cheers,
Ray
