This has been the subject of many threads, and with a lot of misinformation IMHO.I have used the Shelter 501 very successfully with my JMW 12 for quite a while. The JMW 10 has similar if not exactly the same characteristics. I use some of the damping "syrup" in the arm bearing. Many others, including those who have used it with the JMW 10, have written the same.
It seems that much of the naysaying originated with a contributer to the Audiogon analog discussion group who wrote that he has never actually heard this combination, but is opposed to it for theoretical reasons. To which I say Yucch!
That being said, there was a very noticeable improvement in performance when I upgraded my arm with a dropped counterweight and a JMW 12.5 upper bearing weight. While this arrangement may have been especially beneficial with the Shelter cartridge, it was after all an arm upgrade, which should be helpful with any cartridge. That's what upgrades are for--to make it better.
In any event, if you want to inquire further, I suggest a search.
