i think the DRT is a very good cartridge and almost as good as the ZYX universe but with diffrert strengths and different weaknessess (ouch). but ultimately, i too found it to be unworthy of the price.... in fact I doubt if any of the $1500+ cartridges are really worth the price
tag from a comparative point of view... i think that the 'engineering' of cartridges has been well-established for quite some time. i think that a "new improved" cartridge (in general) has about 10%(or less) engineering improvements... the other 'improvements' (if any) seem to fall into the nature of audiophile tweaks.... audiophile tweaks-- which i do deem to be important-- are nontheless often system dependent.. what might help one system might harm another. .. so buying a new,improved cartridge often is a crapshoot.
let me back track a bit and say that the modern MC cartridges of today are MUCH better (in almost every way) than the MC of 10 years ago and quite a bit better than the MC of 5 years ago. so progress has been made....do we care what caused the improvements? from what i can tell about your tastes and sensibilities, it would nice to hear your thoughts on the Ortofon Jubilee. I wonder why the Ortofon cartridges dont get the internet buzz that lesser cartridges have developed. i want to get one to compare with my universe...would love to have a titan on hand too. i do think you can do better than AT OC9 in sound if not in value.
going back to the drt...i do think the SME V is one of the arms that the DRT does not like... i think the 2 are too similar in nature so there is no synergy. also, the drt tended to pick up too much surface noise. the DRT also does not like most step-up trannies-- one of the main reason i sold it. strange as it seems, the DRT does go very well with Syrinx PU3. the DRT also does well on the Schroder Model2 (probably on the Ref too..duh!)
