Schumann?

For me, there's no question that the Schumann 4th to have is Furtwängler's (Berliner Philharmoniker; Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin: Deutsche Grammophon, 14.5.1953).
Obviously mono, but very good sound nonetheless. And the performance is nothing short of exceptional: the only reason keeping me from saying it's the best ever (imho) is that I obviously have not heard all others; but I definitely prefer it to Kubelik, and I cannot even listen anymore to Paray.

As it happens, I used to have it on LP (i.e. my parents have it on LP) and I thought it sounded great too, no reservations about the DG pressing.
If you insist, I think that the chronological order of issues should be:
on 78 as LVM 72 361-72 363
on 10" as LP 16 063 then as LPE 17 170
on 12" as LPM 18 858 paired with Haydn's 88th. I'm pretty sure that this should have a plain brownish paper cover with Robert Schumann's signature printed in front.

However, even if this is the Vinyl Asylum, I'd recommend checking out the latest CD incarnation: DG 4749882 in their 2004 Musik ... Sprache der Welt series. It's available everywhere for $9.99 (don't forget to support the Asylum if you buy on-line!) while Furtwängler LPs in the US tend to be hideously overpriced collectors' items.
By the way, in the try-before-you-buy spirit, if you visit the link below you can listen to the first 90" of every movement on that CD (not to mention that you can see the cover which looks like a beautiful DGG "tulip" LP cover)

P.S. I apologize if you wanted William Schuman. I'm not familiar with his 4th, but in any case I doubt that you would have all that many choices (e.g. Bernstein did not record it).
