In a recent thread regarding which of the 2 formulae would be the preferred choice in conjunction with the Wallytractor alignment guage, I stated that I had been happy using the Loefgren settings and recommended it.Garth and others most kindly and politely suggested that Bearwald might prove superior in reducing distortions near the lead outs.
Of course, being a totally retentive sort, and armed with a new Wallytractor, I set out finally doing a head to head comparison over these past 2 weeks.
My own shift to Loefgren was made during my most recent cartridge upgrade and a direct comparison between the methods was not done until now, as I had been most happy with the Loefgren based results.
Anyways, I now retract my previous Loefgren preference as Baerwald, imo, is indeed as appropriate for modern recordings as for older ones. I had rationalised and inferred that since Loefgren uses nulls based on a larger inner diametre than Baerwald ,its results would be more appropriate to contempoary pressing practice and have further benefit over the bulk of those recordings.
Not so. Baerwald is indeed beneficial and in my revised opinion, the superior overall methodology for LP recordings.It was obviously cleaner and had more ease at the runout using Baerwald and the very minor distortions at 2 points in mid-recording were simply not enuf to justify Loefgren considering the magnitude of distortion effects at recordings end(Loefgren also exhibited 2 very minor mid-recording distortion locales)
My thanks to garth for pressing my preconceptions.
Also to Wally Malewicz.Without the simplicity and accuracy of his Wallytractor alignment guage, the act of doing the comparison would have been difficult enuf to discourage me from doing the auditions and most likely have been subject to setting errors that could have nulled the tests.
