Thanks. I think there are two separate questions involved, which I may have obscured previously in the discussion. One is if a different mounting distance leads to an alignment that is in accordance with the tonearm specs, the other being if a different mounting distance leads to no alignment at all. What I really was asking, is if the latter is the case for the Wallytractor, and it seems to be, since it's built for a specific effective length. An ordinary two-point protractor, or Geodisk et al., can tolerate several mounting distances with most arms, but only as far as the play in the headshell slots allows. These alignments may not be in accordance with the tonearm specs, but still be perfectly valid in their own terms. But if there's not enough play in the slots, or if there are no slots, a two-point protractor won't necessarily work either, that's true. The arm can certainly have an impossible mounting distance. But there remains a difference between a protractor made for a specific effective length (only one exact mounting distance) and protractors not made for any specific length (a small range of mounting distances, provided that you don't think it's evil to violate the tonearm specs).
I'm just describing differences out of interest; I'm sure the Wallytractor is a wonderful setup tool.
