I gather that once the set screw in the tonearm's base is loosened, one can move the tonearm base up (not down, as it seems to be in the full-down position as delivered from the factory) and then retighten the screw.As for the motor noise during spin-up on my table, it occurs whether the belt is installed or not. It also seems to continue indefinitely if the belt is not present. If the belt is on, or if one touches the spinning pulley with a fingetip, the noise goes away. So it seems that applying some sideways pressure on the motor suppresses some kind of vibration.
I wish I could remember if that's how things were when the table was new. I am the original owner and didn't use the table a lot (a year at most), and there's no question of any kind of damage due to moving or shipping. So I don't see how the motor could have been damaged.
