Well, as I understand it, a true mono cartridge only reads the horizontal direction. What this means for playing mono records is that it doesn't tend to pick up ticks and scratches because those are vertical signals. On the other hand, with stereophonic reproduction, the vertical signal is one of the channels, meaning that with a monaural cartridge, you won't be picking up one of the two channels.
