Jonathan, you make a very good point. Fremer's Hovland preamp, while a very nice preamp, would certainly influence any result with these excellent phono stages. the Hovland is not the last word in detail and openness. i use a passive preamp and i have found that my results will vary considerably if there is an active gain stage.
my point was that i have heard such positive things from a Connoisseur 4.0 owner that i highly respect that if the Boulder was percieved to be better (at least to Fremer) it must be quite remarkable. i would love to have the opportunity to compare the Boulder, the Connoisseur 4.0, and my Lamm (not to mention the Walker and the Manley). it may be that all these (and others) may in some systems and contexts be "best" on a particular day.
it seems that phono stage performance is particularly system dependant due to the wide variation of cartridge characteristics and line stage influence. other system issues (particularly noise issues) and personal tastes can also make significant differences.
