I wonder if something like this might be true about the RVG recordings?
"In most cases, the Beatles' mono mixes are more cohesive than the stereo (there's only so much you can do with four tracks to get a good stereo mix). Let's not forget that George Martin prepared the mono mixes with the Beatles' input, while the stereo mixes were dashed off quickly by one of the engineers a few days later. Mono ruled the pop world of the '60s, so that's what they gave the most care."
