Hi EFM, maybe you can help me. Do I need an ultrasonic cleaner?
I have a simple, low cost manual RCM the 'vinyl bug' a 3D printed turntable connected to a small shop vac that I expect is as effective as most vacuum RCMs and I use Tergitol as my cleaning solution. It certainly does get dust off of LPs but I am often left with clicks and pops on vinyl that otherwise looks in great shape. I wonder if this is due to debris stuck in the groove that might be shifted by ultrasonics. Though something like the Vevor (generic US tank plus rotation motor) appeals to my inner cheapskate the convenience of a single disc, press a button and come back later capability is attractive, which leads me to Humminguru and Degritter. I've looked at several review videos for each and they are mostly light on results for reducing noise/clicks/pops. A couple of notable reviews are from The Audiophile Man and Dave Denyer who both waxed lyrical about how the Degritter improved sound quality but little about noise reduction. Denyer even states in one of his videos that he's not that interested in noise reduction, only sound improvement that makes me think these machines really don't make a big difference to noise/clicks/pops. In fact, there is a YT video from someone who cleaned several LPs using a Spin Clean, made needle drops and then ran them through a Degritter cycle and needle-dropped again. There really wasn't any difference in clicks/pops if at all. Humminguru would be worth a punt but one thing I did learn from one of Dave Denyer's videos is that it drove his cat crazy, whereas the Degritter didn't. That leaves the Degritter, which is a really nice piece of kit but a pricey punt. Will it really give me more than a vacuum RCM?
