I'd say 1-2 seconds per thump

Can't be the phone pre-amp since I get it with two different units, Unlikely to be the pre-amp since I only get it with the phono with the phono pre-amp connected. Similar argument for everything downstream of the pre-amp.
I am doing the pain in the butt experiment this weekend, I am switching my second system turntable and will see if the turntable is sufficient to generate/eliminate the noise, My sense is the cartridge is the issue, but I have yet to guess why. I am going to take the turntable to someone who is quite reliable, but I don't have the time for another week, since he is 90 miles away. I want to try to eliminate any other possibilities before I do that. I might note that my cartridge is around 9 years old, and my previous Transfiguration cartridge lost a channel (requiring replacement). I also cannot exclude a possible fault with the Linn cables (integral so not testable by me). I do know that disconnecting the Armageddon jumper has no effect so its not the turntable motor (also the turntable doesn't need to be spinning to get the noise).
Switching the input from the phono preamp to the pre-amp also makes no difference making the pre-amp less likely a culprit. Though I don't want to do it, I have a spare pre-amp with an integral phono stage that I can try as well.
I guess I should ask; if I haven't used a tubed pre-amp for a long time, do I need to do anything special before firing it up?
