I do believe the angle of the slot relative to the rotation of the platter makes a difference. They way I've addressed it is to ensure that the platter's initial direction is into the open slot. Meaning, the slot is angled toward the incoming platter direction, at lease for the initial suction phase. This way, there is maximum space to bring in the bubbles from the RCF. When I hit the reverse direction, there is far less liquid to suck up, plus it gives the velvet strip a chance to pull up any remaining contaminants.
Not 100% sure if this approach is correct and I think you're right, it's a question for VPI. I've asked to join their website forum so I can ask that and other questions.
