That album struck me the same way. I too, was unfamiliar with Coles and was very surprised at how good he was and wondered why he was not more well known during his life time?
A Mosaic set of cds of all of Sonny Clark's Blue Notes (9 albums) arrived Friday. So that pretty much shot my weekend. I also have most of these on vinyl so of course now it will be necessary to go back and compare and contrast. The Mosaic sets have advantages with respect to the great book that comes with each set plus providing alternate takes. Also the cds always sound clean and quiet even if a bit lifeless. They do not compare with vinyl soundwise, and I am particularly impressed with the recent re-issues, both the Classic series and the Tone Poets.
