The arm height setting will depend on the generation of SL1200 and the mat thickness so here is a snip from the Japanese manual which gives dimensions of the "cartridge height" specification as 18mm so anyone can make the appropriate arm height adjustment according to the calibration markings on the arm base.
For an original SL1200 mk2 with a standard thick "supermat", the 0 corresponds to 15mm so setting "3" would be appropriate. For Mk3 to Mk5 which had a thin mat, the manual specifies the arm base 0 setting as 17mm so "1" would be appropriate.
For anyone using a Technics headshell, the tilt varies due to variations in the casting and hole centration. The reference arm height level also changes with different brands of headshell so anyone wanting to do precise adjustments should be using a bubble level. A 0.4 x 0.7mil elliptical tip is not especially fussy so it doesn't really matter too much.
While starting off at the nominal VTF is a good starting point, one should be aware that manufacturing tolerances and temperature will affect the optimum VTF so what works for your cartridge is not necessarily going to be the optimum for someone else.
