Both cartridge and phono stage are better.

I use a MF a3.2 in my computer system. I used its phono stage for many years and found it to be very transparent, quiet and engaging. I now use an outboard PS audio phono because it includes an ADAC for vinyl rips, and a lot of loading options for various cartridges. The outboard stage is better, but not by as much as the cost difference would imply.
