Steely Dan UHQR

I had a nice sized credit with Elusive Disc, so when the "Can't Buy a Thrill" UHQR became available I decided to give it a shot. I still have my original and thought it was in pretty good shape, but I said what the hell, let me try this. CBAT was one of those LPs that was on my my apartment during the university days A LOT, and live bands at dances used to play "Reeling in the Years" constantly. (Hard to think of Steely Dan as dance music, but there you have it).

Gotta tell you that this sounds really good. Yes, you can hear stuff that you couldn't hear before, and the rhythms in Do It Again were that much punchier, and the vocal differences between the 3 soloists they used on this record are just that much more pronounced. (David Palmer and Jim Hodder sing, as well as Donald Fagen. And Walter Becker's bass lines are much clearer. This is a high-quality production. Is it worth $150? Only you can decide. This was my first UHQR - I gave a pass to "Kind of Blue" - I have that on LP and SACD already, and while it is the best-selling jazz record of all time, it spends much less time on my system than others. I would be all over Satch Plays Fats if they did that.

I was planning to purchase only Countdown to Ecstasy - I have worn out my original there, and it is my favorite Steely Dan album - but after hearing this, I am reconsidering my position. I do wonder what they are going to do with Katy Lied, where I understand that an equipment malfunction during recording gave Fagen and Becker serious concerns about the sound quality.
