I'm not convinced by his explanation of the importance of tight tolerances in the arm bearings. He seems worried about bearing chatter given the groove modulations can be as small as a micron, but I'd think the weight of the cartridge/arm/counterweight would be more than enough to prevent chatter from the minuscule energy transmitted from the stylus into the arm. (I guesstimate a typical cartridge+arm+counterweight would weigh somewhere around 3 ounces (over 70 grams), and that weight is holding the arm down in its bearings.) SME arms, for example, use knife edge bearings - they are held down by nothing but the arm's weight, and I've never heard anyone complain of chatter in those arms.
Has anyone tested for arm bearing chatter and seen/heard it in actual playing conditions?
