Transitioning from Rega RP6 to P6

I told myself I really didn't need another turntable. I was very happy with the sound of the RP6 and thought it would be my last table. But as many of our resolutions are not fulfilled, so indeed, was this one. I would have considered the P8 or P10 but I'm not crazy about the skeletal look.

The new P6 with the Exact 2 came a couple of days ago and I've had a chance to assess the difference. I had installed a Groovetracer on the RP6 so the main difference is the lighter plinth. Comparing the two tables, I haven't noticed any great difference; they sound very similar. Some with a finer ear might. But at this age and with some tinnitus, I'm not able to definitively say one sounds better than the other.

Still, I'm glad for a change. This table, because of the plinth, does look somewhat classier than the RP6. It came with a black mat but I felt it needed a little contrast so I ordered this Rega white mat. I thought it would be the usual 2 mm.thickness but it's only 1 mm. I gather this is the mat for the P10 which has a ceramic platter. It really looked too thin so I mounted it on top of the supplied black mat which now amounts to 3mm. The sound doesn't seem any different but, superficial as I am, I like the look. I have to say though,$45 for a 1 mm. wool mat is fairly ridiculous. I think the mat is about $25 in Europe. Probably costs about $5 to make and doesn't involve much engineering.

I'm thinking that this is going to be my last table. Ah- the best laid plans...

Sorry, pic is on its side and I didn't feel like doing it over.
