Some belts are machined to be smoother on one surface than the other - I assume the smoother side would run a tiny bit quieter but give less traction & transfer less torque from the motor to the platter. Is it audible? And which side is preferable? I am probably the wrong person to ask - the 40 year old belt on my Linn groans and creaks till the platter comes up to speed, after which it sounds fine to me.
(By the way, I am a believer in what you call the "placebo effect". I have convinced myself I heard differences when I changed nothing, didn't even move in my chair, just told myself there was a difference. The mind can play tricks.)
